Breast Implant Placement

Subglandular implants lie above the pectoral muscle. This method is suited to women with a good amount of natural breast tissue. Subglandular placement is usually inappropriate for thin or flat-chested patients since rippling and implant visibility can be an issue. The surgery is less invasive since the muscle remains intact. Benefits may include a faster and more comfortable recovery.

Subfascial implant placement has gained popularity worldwide for a number of reasons. Instead of positioning the implants above or below the muscle, the implants lie just beneath the fascia that covers the muscle. Less dissection is required, potentially minimizing downtime and discomfort in recovery. Compared to over-the-muscle implants, there is less chance of rippling and implant distortion during exercise, making subfascial placement an excellent option for thin individuals and athletes. The results can look incredibly natural.

With submuscular breast implant placement, the implants are below the pectoralis major muscle. This technique is advantageous for thin women and patients with flat chests. The muscle provides a thin layer of coverage to hide the edges of the implant, so there is less risk of implant rippling and visibility. The downside is the implants may appear slightly distorted when flexing the pectoralis muscle during exercise. The muscle also needs to be partially dissected, prolonging the recovery.

Breast Implanet Incisions

Transaxillary

In this method, the surgeon makes an incision hidden in the armpit. This technique is not suitable for teardrop implants or round silicone implants on the larger side. However, it’s a good option for women with a history of keloid scarring since the breasts remain unscarred.

Inframammary

This is the most common method of implant placement. Placing the scar in the natural crease under the breast is a good way to hide the scars where no one will see them.

Areolar

This technique is limited to saline implants; women that prefer silicone implants will need to choose a different incision.

Results

This process is commonly called the “drop and fluff” as the implants slowly lower on the chest wall, and the surrounding tissues settle around them, creating breasts that look and feel natural.
